ABC’s of Right Attitude

Right Attitude

Many take the “power of attitude” for granted but little did they know that it makes a big difference.

“It is your attitude, not your aptitude that determines your altitude”.  As Zig Ziglar says it, the way we respond to the circumstance around us will determine what kind of day we will have. We can either respond positively or negatively and end it right or suffer the consequence. It’s our choice.

-A choice on how to react to situations.

-A choice on how people will affect your mood.

-A choice to be in a good mood or in a bad mood.

-A choice to have the right attitude.

But how can we have the right attitude?

I believe that the Bible, which is God’s word, is the most reliable book, that could teach us how to. It is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, showing what is wrong, improving and training in right living. (1 Timothy 3:16 American Translation)

Do not worry! It’s not yet too late to cultivate a right attitude. Here, I’d like to give you the simple steps (ABC’s) I know base from what I’ve learned through God’s word, on how you can begin to cultivate the right attitude:

A-cceptance

If you fail to respond in the right way, it is because you are a human. You commit mistakes. And the first step to cultivating a right attitude is to accept that you are a sinner.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:8)

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23)

B-elieve

Repentance is not enough, unless you believe that it’s only God who can change you into a better person, who can turn your old self into a renewed person-a new creation.

Strip off your old self, which follows your former ways of living and ruins you as it follows the desires that deceive you. And put on the new self, which is created to be like God, righteous and holy in truth. (Ephesians 4:22)

C-onfession

If you truly accept that you are a sinner, who has fall short of God’s glory, then you have to repent and confess your sins to God.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

C-hoose wisely

Choose your friends wisely! Surround yourself with positive people and with godly character. Who are they?  Someone whom you can be accountable with, who can rebuke or correct you, who can mentor or you can mentor with, someone who could help you and influence you to become a better person.

Do not be deceived, “Bad company ruins good morals”. (1 Corinthians 15:33)

Dying to ourselves

We have to die to ourselves daily. Dying to self is all that pertains to “me” .It means we no longer think of ourselves. We no longer serve our own selfish desires but we think more highly of others.

Each of you, don’t be interested in your own things, rather in the things of others.(Philippians 2:4)

E-mulate

Be like Jesus! (Philippians 2:5) Emulate Christ on how he reacted towards different situations. There is no better example than Jesus, himself! Observe and learn from him, how he walked, how he talked and how he lived as you read the bible

F-eed your soul

Feed your mind with things that are pure, lovely, adorable, noble, true, excellent and right. (Philippians 4:8) Keep your mind on things above not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:2)

What are these earthly things?

Kill, then what is earthly in you: sexual sin, uncleanness, passion, evil, lust and greed. But now, also get rid of all such things as anger, rage, malice, slander and dirty talk. (Colossians 3:5 & 8)

So whatever you store in your heart and in your mind it will be the outcome of your actions.  A good man produces good things from the good stored in his heart, and an evil man produces evil from evil stored there. What you say flows from your heart! (Luke 6:45)

G-o and have the right attitude!

The word go implies an active action. It demands to follow a certain procedure as defined the by Merriam-Webster dictionary. To go means to come after God, to follow or obey his commands.

If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Matthew 16:24

People may respond to us in a bad way, but Jesus encourages us to always respond and have the right attitude.

Just know that God’s version of a right attitude contains nothing negative. Notice that all those negatives were not found in the bible –Karen Wolf
