Fair vs. Favor

Is God fair? Does equality or fairness still exists? If God is fair then why do evil men prosper? Why do poor people exist? Why do good people suffer from an incurable disease? Why do babies die at a very young age?

Have you ever asked God these questions?

In the eyes of many, nothing seems to be fair left in this world except God. Is He?

We doubt as if we were made to believe that fairness or justice was long gone in man’s vocabulary. We may not fully understand or grasp why these things happen but the answers to our questions lies in the very purpose of Jesus.

One man was convinced and realized that God is fair, that equality exists. In the book of Acts, Luke believed and strongly profess as he says, ” I now realize how true it is that God treats everyone the same”. What does he mean “God treats everyone the same?” (Acts 10:34)

Before we jumped into the context and deeper meaning of this verse , I’d like to give you a diagram of two differing words that would help us understand more of God’s fairness.

Treating everyone the same in other versions means shows no favoritism.

root word for fairness
synonyms: just , equitable
to show impartiality.
free from favoritism

root word favoritism
synonyms: grace, kindness
to show partiality
treat with favor

Injustice on earth is at the hands of men, not of God. Fairness means, He gives equal chances to everyone. What Luke is trying to persuade us, is that God gives us the liberty to be saved. Salvation is offered freely to everyone, and its up to us whether we’ll accept it or not. He gave us the freewill or the choice.

If God does not allow favoritism, have you asked why Christians are highly favored? or why do people who observe and obeys God’s command are favored by God?

Yes, God’s favor are promised to them because they have chosen God. Everyone has been given the chance to accept him but not everyone will receive God’s blessings because not everyone has decided to accept and follow him.

God’s fairness doesn’t contradict to God’s favor. Our obedience does coincide with his favor and so does our disobedience to punishment/destruction. (We’ll see God’s promises in the book of Deuteronomy in chapter 28).

God’s fairness isn’t seen and defined in man’s own way but God wants us to be just and act justly just as He is.

I’d like to answer each questions that I wrote above , so to give your inquisitive minds satisfaction.

-Is God fair?

Yes, if you are not convinced let me ask you why?

-Why do evil men prosper?

Everyone is given different talents and skills; knowing one’s strengths and capabilities will lead you to become successful but it’s up to them whether they will acknowledge the giver of those gifts. Some do but only for a season, never eternally usually not even enough to satisfy them. Do not envy them because it wouldn’t last long.

Those who definitely knew and has cultivated their gifts will eventually lead them to prosper. It is by our own will.

Psalm 37:1-2
Do not fret when wicked men seem to succeed! Do not envy evildoers! For they will quickly dry up like grass, and wither away like plants

-Why do poor people exist?

We have heard many stories of people from rags to riches who became successful bec. of hard work and determination.

Proverbs 13:4
Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper and be satisfied.

-Why do good people suffer an incurable disease? why do babies die at a very young age?

Are you a good person? Have you ever stolen anything? even just a coin from your mother’s pocket? have you ever told a lie? white lies? If yes, then you’re not a good person.

Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except one– God. Mark 10:18

Everyone has sinned and failed God’s standard according to Romans 3:23

We may nor fully understand why God allows it to happen but is said that is for our good (Romans 8:28)

We are also stewards of our own body, if our body is the temple of the holy spirit then we should take care of it (1 Corinthians 6:19)

New Year’s Resolution : New or Renew?

New year is a time where we revisit and evaluate our list whether we have accomplished our new year’s resolution or not. Its either we recommit to follow our unmet goals or revise those which have been effective and adopt that strategy to create new ones.

Our list would vary from creating an exercise program to stay fit or a regimen to lose some weight, learn how to save money after spending a glamorous shopping on a holiday, changing our bad habit and developing a good one such as going to work earlier everyday as possible, etc. and etc. But among those list, have we considered making a more meaningful resolution ? I’m not saying those I’ve mentioned above aren’t.

As humans, we were created to be social beings- relational people. And God created us to have a relationship with him.

Genesis 1:27
“So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female he created them.”

Because we were created in his image, we have this connection in God that we could respond to and have fellowship with Him. With his desire to have an intimate relationship with us, He gave up his son ,Jesus ,to die for our sins so he could bridge the gap and allow us to reconnect with his Father.

God has placed so much value in relationships that he choose us to be his friends and no longer servants nor slaves. (John 15:15 )

So do you have the same heart just like him? Will you also desire developing an intimate relationship with Him and let it grow?

If we say we love God, we will obey his commandments. (John 14:15)

In Nehemiah chapter 10, we can see that the Israelites renewed their commitment to God by making an agreement to obey Him and even sealed it with their names on it. If we read the previous chapters, they have failed to obey God. They have been stubborn and forgetful about what God has done to them, how God helped them escaped from the hands of the cruel and hostile Egyptians. But amidst their hardheaded attitudes, through their righteous leaders, the covenant has been restored, fellowship with God has been restored again.

Relationships. Does it matter to you?

If we’ll look back at our life, what has been our priority? Family? Career? Promotion? Health? Status? Popularity?

Will you commit to love God more? to obey him more? to love yourself and others?

So what do you promise to yourself this year ?

Trust God as you pray that these would not just be wishes and another list for “My New Year’s Resolution” but he’ll enable you to accomplish these aspirations.

Love: his mystery

With the many attributes that God has, his mystery and wonder has drawn me. This morning when God’s attribute was put on discussion after encountering this topic for the nth time, it has once again lit the excitement of researching and studying this trait.

Who is God? Who is He in your life and how was He described in the bible?
Such a perfect time to re-evaluate ourselves again as we reflect on these questions on how much and how deep is our knowledge of Who God is?

I’ve been on a spiritual valley lately. I admit that I am spending less and less of my time with my father. God must have been jealous right now and sulking because I’ve trade my time for him for something unimportant rather than prioritizing my relationship with him.

Sometimes, when we find someone mysterious and we got curious about this person ,we are drawn to know more about him/her just like a man tyring to get know a woman he likes. As some would say, as a woman we have to keep ourself mysterious. If anyone is pursuing you, do not reveal everything about yourself. There must be a hidden mystery that would allow him to know you more.God desires the same, He longs to be seeked and known. I just thought, maybe God remains mysterious because he’s waiting for someone who’ll discover who he is. If we desire to know him, he will be pleased to honor that desire and made himself known. We might not grasp and fully understand everything about him but He will enable us with the help of the holy spirit.

(Job 11:7″Can you discover the depths of God? Can you discover the limits of the Almighty?”

God wants us to know him more. The more that we spend time with him,as we read his word, it is the more that he will reveal himself. Just as we spend time with somebody just to get to know him/her more,He wants full our attention and devotion. He will reveal himself little by little as we diligently seek him in our lives.

Take time to appreciate who he is as you discover and experience him daily.

How long Mr. Write?

I wish their hunch are right but not until I deserve the truth.

How long should I be guessing, trying to figure out what’s ther real score between us. What’s up with invitations and long conversations that seems to show interest but there’s no clear intention.

How long will I be able to tolerate it? I know I can’t hold it for a long time. The longer it seems the longer that I’ll have to suffer emotionally. Should I close my door and open up to others?

Love is not a fairy tale at all filled with fantasies that a little girl believes in.

In this groaning of my heart, I know you are mindful oh Lord.
Hear my cry and help my troubled heart.

You’ve said, my child do not be afraid. You have to let it go and trust me. Why don’t you try and test me?

Why so downcast oh my soul? It’s foolishness to ascribe into your own strength.

Trust me for the answers. Trust me as I reveal it to you.

Answer revealed

Should I dare to do it?

I was challenging myself as I try to keep myself awake, catching him up online. My head is already aching for pain and my eyes nearly cries to sleep but then I tried to start a conversation. Soon as I’ve established, I then find a way to redirect our topic into something serious. I started by asking if it’s alright to ask him something and said , go ahead. Right before typing my question, my knees were shaking. If you could just see me at that moment, I was having hand tremors, my heartbeat starts to pound so fast and hard. At last, I managed to say it through chat. I started by saying, ” been thinking about what u said..just got curious…I don’t remember when , pero nabanggit mo nun you’d want to know me more…why do you want to know more about me ?”

I felt anxious after typing those words. I wasn’t expecting him to right away answer my question. It took him a while composing those words.

There was a moment of idle.

I saw him typing as it is shown on the screen. It stopped then I waited for the message to come.

Should be I happy or be afraid of what might his answer could be?

Soon as the words was flashed on the screen , a leap of joy came as he revealed it to me saying, ” well to be straight forward i am attracted to you, i dunno honestly which one comes first courting or getting to know.”

I don’t know how to answer him back, but deep inside me I was thrilled (kinikilig).

All I ‘ve said was “Salamat sa honesty”.

Somehow, I felt relieved after hearing that out to him. I’ve been struggling for months trying to figure out what is his intention. Now that it was made clear at last, I can be more at peace.

He has also expressed that he has all the good intentions and even sorry afor not making it clear and transparent to people, especially to my parents as he said.
He was just looking for a good chance to do it (telling them) as he added.

I was already feeling too tired and sleepy before we started our conversation but after that night of revelation, It made me hard to sleep. I was too groggy and tired the next day coming to work. I can’t even understand why I feel butterflys on my stomach.

Oh, this was the first time that I felt happy yet anxious. I just hope and pray that he would be consistent enough and persistent to prove his good intention.

Oh,God help me to be wise on how should I respond. Guide my heart as I make decisions that I would not depend on my feelings.

finding courage (to confront)

speak truth in love

letting go

These were the words that rang on my mind after our conversation with a friend and her husband.

It made sense when David, asked me those questions, questions that made reflect and think a lot. Questions that didn’t just open my eyes to the reality of life , of love and of relationships but confronted me to speak the truth in love. Everyone deserves the truth but not everybody loves to hear and know what the truth is. Sometimes it is painful that they rather hide and keep it to themselves.

Our conversation helped me a lot to evaluate what has been going on our relationship pertaining to the friendship I had with a guy that I’ve been sharing to them. A few years back, I made a confrontation. I did’nt like what happened after I made a decision to do it with two different men in two different situations. So now, hearing the challenge from a friend, I felt reluctant and nervous just thinking of it. I still had the trauma remembering what turned out after doing it. But looking back and realizing it’s help on me, it has really kept me keep on track on what I stand and believe in relationships. I was strucked when he asked me : do you think if you did’nt do it (confronting) it has gotten worse?

Why should I be afraid? what would refrain me from doing it?

Maybe he’s right, I fear that I might loose something.

But I might have loose something, doing that kind of decision will gain good also for something as he added.

Confronting someone was never that easy for me . I needed courage to drive me on doing it. I know I can’t but he will enable me.This goes back to trusting God and believing that if he’ll close a door for a reason he will open up another. I have to leave the fear and learn to trust God as I surrender my life, my love story to him.

Surely God would send you someone who’ll really pursue and win your heart as he encouarges me. ” If he will not then wait for God’s timing that he would send you the man who is brave enough to show his love. ”

I’d like to believe what he said and live God’s promise that He will take care of my future.

If after doing the confrontation will turn out good then thank God but if not still thank God for sparing your heart, for saving your time in finding clues what’s the real score between you and what his intention as I say this to myself.

Lord, help me what words should I say, and how should I deliver it. I pray that you would prepare my heart for whatever result that I may gain and simply learn to trust you. Amen

Grow up!

There’s no way down than to grow up! As a natural process, babies don’t stay as they are. They crawl, stumble and soon learn to walk on their own. Growing in God is not as different as growing up as a human being as Christin Ditchfield says it.

As Christians,we are encouraged to grow in our faith. We are not meant to stay stagnant.

We are to abandon our childish ways and act maturely.

But why do we need to mature? Why there is a need to grow? Reading through His word, these were the reasons that God impressed upon me.

1. Because God says it so…It is his command. It is a must. We will only mature if we’ll meditate on His word. We are commanded to study the scriptures day and night. Notice the verbs: shall not depart, you shall meditate

Joshua 1:8

This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

2. If God commands us to grow in the knowledge of Him, it is also his desire for us, that we will all attain maturity. God desires what’s best for us. He only thinks of our good.

Psalm 8:4

What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?

Ephesians 4:13

Until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

3. Because our natural design is to grow and not to shrink nor deplete. Milk is for the infant and solid food is for the mature, likewise in our spiritual life we need to move on from drinking milk into taking solid food.

Hebrews 6:1

Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity…

Hebrews 5:13

Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.

4. So God can entrust His word to you, for you to teach and share it with others. He expects us to grow so that He’ll be able to pass on the teaching to faithful teachers. If we keep on being spoon-fed who would continue God’s work? Who would teach and disciple others ?

Hebrews 5:12

In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!

5. So that we will not stumble and be easily swayed by false teachingsIf we have a firm foundation on God’s word then we will be able to decipher and identify which is true or not. His word is our source of wisdom. It is useful for teaching, rebuking, for reproof.

Ephesians 4:14

Then we will no longer be infantstossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.

If you think you’ve been stuck up, do not think twice! This is the time to grow! Move on and progress! Do not be contented as a mediocre Christian but always seek for improving yourself. Desire growth because that is what God wants. Be a flourshing tree that bears fruit and not as a Bonsai tree that is ony good for display.

Psalm 1:1-3

Blessed is the one    who does not walk in step with the wickedor stand in the way that sinners take    or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,    and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,    which yields its fruit in seasonand whose leaf does not wither—    whatever they do prospers.seedling-growing
